Karen Gutfreund was born in Lexington, KY, and grew up in the mid-west but has spent most of her adult life in New York City. Karen worked at MoMA NYC in the Painting & Sculpture Department, for the Andre Emmerick Gallery and The Knoll Group. She now resides in San Jose, CA and is actively involved on the board of various arts organizations, creating her own work and promoting the work of other artists. "I create work that involves painting, mixed media & collage, blurring the boundaries between these mediums. Through the process of building up and layering color on the surface, the works reveal my deep interest in color, mood and abstraction. By closely studying the layers of visual information and text contained in the work, subtle details, new relationships and the meaning of the abstraction can be discovered. I hope these works lend themselves to the viewers senses and imagination; and they subtly reveal the inner complexity of my dreams, nightmares and emotions."
